Current Client Testimonial: Getting my Body Back, Week 1 & 2

I’ve been here before: low self-esteem, eating poorly, and I can’t keep myself accountable to work out on my own. The last time I felt like this, it was shortly after I had my second baby, almost 4 years ago. (cliche moment of where did the time go?!) It’s frustrating, because I know what to do. I know how to eat right and I know that I need to work out. I just haven’t been able to do it on my own. I’ve done many Fit4Mom programs before like the Running Mamas 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon Training Programs. I have also done Stroller Strides. I fell away from it after an injury and really a MILLION excuses, but I knew where to turn when I knew I needed some help. I need some help to find ME again.

What I have heard of Body Back was intense. It sounded SO HARD! So DISCIPLINED. So SCARY! I When I showed up to my first class I was extremely intimidated. It had been so long since I had done any sort of intense work out. I didn’t know anyone in the class besides the instructor, Marisa. And as sweet as Marisa is, I know she is in crazy good shape from when she was my Stroller Strides instructor. We did measurements and various fitness tests that we will do again at the end of the session to compare. The first workout was INTENSE! But I DID IT!

We were given a journal to write down EVERY LITTLE THING we eat that week. Also to write down our homework exercises. And I did it! The meal plan has been very easy to follow and I kind of love not having to plan or think about what I’m going to make. It’s all laid out for me. I could incorporate some of my own healthy recipes, but for now, not thinking is kind of amazing. I’ve been going to Stroller Strides at least a couple times a week along with running and my Body Back workout DVD. A big change for me is going out to eat on the weekends. I have NEVER ordered a salad at a restaurant before. I have always had the “Go big or go home” mentality when out to eat. It’s hard. Especially when all I really want is a big fat juicy cheeseburger. But I did it! I ordered a salad at a burger joint with vinaigrette dressing! I’m telling myself, “Eight weeks! That’s it”. And I fully intend to make better decisions when this is over, but for now this is working.

We weigh in every Tuesday. I saw real change after just the first week! So I’m definitely motivated to see where this journey takes me. It’s a challenge, but focusing on small victories each day and having a clear plan to follow has me excited to keep going!

Current Client Testimonial: Week 6 Update

Week 6 Already! When I walked into class last night I was frazzled. Between carpool for school morning and night, a trip to the park with my non-school age boy, swim lessons after school, dinner for the family, helping with homework, planning the next PTA event and getting the kids to bed on time with their teeth brushed there hardly seems enough left in me to do anything but sleep, let alone go through an intense workout. But when I walk into class each night, it’s all gone. I can focus on me and what I want for myself; challenge myself and let a little frustration out too. And then there’s my favorite at the end of class--MEDITATION. We just lay on the floor and close our eyes. Marisa has had many different reflections to think about while we lay there. Doing nothing, not stressing or planning the next meal or the next event. I have a couple favorite reflections with one being about the new relationship we have with ourselves. I imagined sitting across from myself and actually naming some great qualities about myself. That is something I think every mom could stand to do more often, right?! Another meditation was about our kids and WHY we are there. These both had me in tears. The food choices are getting easier and easier. My husband actually LOVES the dinners I’ve been making (he’s even managed to successfully prepare a couple himself!). They have few ingredients and are very easy to make . I’ve weaned myself off creamer in my coffee which was probably the biggest change. A big help for me is just making sure I have a lot of fruit, nuts, and prepped veggies on hand for those times I would have normally raided the fridge or pantry. I have to say I’ve noticed a huge change in my two boys’ eating habits too. When they ask for pizza they ask for “homemade with no sugar.” They just went trick or treating and decided they would rather have a toy instead of candy so they get to “trade” their candy for a small toy on Saturday. Proud mama moments for sure. This program is so much more than what I thought it was going to be. Are the classes hard? ABSOLUTELY!! Is the meal plan a huge change that takes a large adjustment from the whole family? YES! It’s been amazing seeing my body change but even more, seeing my mental state change. “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” -Fred DeVito said it originally I think, but it’s a message our instructor gives us daily. I can take these classes as seriously or as laid back as I choose. Our instructor wouldn’t kick me out if I just held plank while I was supposed to be doing push ups. But what she has said often and sticks with me the most is “You get out of this class what you want.” and then I think “why am I here? ...where was I 6 weeks ago? Why on earth would I back down now?”

Current Client Testimonial: End of Session Update

I did it!

My first round of assessments came and went already. The results are more than I dreamed I could do. I didn't have a goal weight in mind for this journey, I really just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I've been weighing myself at home so that number wasn't a huge surprise. What got me the most was my muscle % increase. In every way I move my body, I'm stronger. It's amazing to feel that. Walking up stairs, picking up my kids, and holding a plank. I didn't notice how different I look until I saw the before/after photos but I could feel it every day.

Aside from the physical changes and improved strength I’ve seen, I feel that I’ve really changed my and my family’s lifestyle to be more healthy too. We’ve significantly improved our diet (my 4 and 5 year olds are happy to snack on snap peas and carrots!) and I know I’m setting a great example for the rest of their lives by being active and taking care of myself.

It's been quite a ride. Meeting such encouraging strong women in these classes has been awesome. The Facebook group for encouragement and struggles was a huge help and appreciated. We're all so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for and it was such a great way to get to know other moms. It gave me new appreciation for myself and eating and exercise. And as challenging as it was, it was way more rewarding than I ever expected.

Some of my results:

  • Weight; -10%

  • Body Fat: -8%

  • BMI -7%

  • Muscle +4%

  • Inches -9.5 inches (4 in my waist)

  • I held plank for double what I did the first day

  • I did 75% more biceps curls in a minute

  • 28 pushups in a minute (I couldn’t do 1 when I showed up)

My journey isn't over and I'm looking forward to seeing what else I'm capable of in the next session.
