Congratulations to Mary Doerr, our 'Mom of the Month' for October!
Mary is a dedicated Stroller Strides participant, joining us numerous days a week with her adorable daughter, Penelope! She is a super hard worker, always going the extra mile and setting a high bar for the moms around her!
Mary has made great strides in fitness, motherhood, and life, and we are so thankful that she is an integral part of our village!
Join us in congratulating Mary and read on to get to know her a little better and find out what unique drink Mary and her husband make together at home!
Mom of the Month Questions:
Hometown (where you grew up): Seminole, FL
Current part of the Triangle that you live in: Cary
Education (optional): BA in English from Duke University and MEd for secondary education from Boston University
Stroller Strides Member since: January 2015
Members of your Family: Karl - husband and Penelope (1yr old on 10/21!!!)
Tell us about your children: Penelope is a very curious baby who likes to be out and about. She loves seeing other people and being social with other babies and young children. Her first word is "apple." We thought she was saying "apple" and were very confused but then my husband saw her playing in the Exercaucer and pressing the button that said "a is for apple," and then Penelope would say "apple." She loves discovering new things, has a very short attention span, and loves playing musical toys. She also loves to flip pages in books and sometimes eats the paper. Sweet potato is her favorite food although she does enjoy eating shoes, leaves, and rocks.
Current/previous Career: Teacher, high school English, 9-11th grade and Creative Writing.
What was your childhood ambition? To be a CEO and a mom
What does motherhood mean to you? Motherhood means being the CEO of the family that my husband and I build together. I have come to learn that being a mother is a very powerful and difficult responsibility. Whether I like it or not, I set the tone for our family (and the schedule and the social involvement and the meal plan, etc etc etc). As a mom, I really hope to pay attention to the individual gifts and talents of Penelope to help her develop those and become the person she was created to be - not just the person I think she should be. This is already a battle - ha! :)
What is the furthest you have been from home? Sweden for a mission trip in college.
What has Stroller Strides done for you (or meant to you)? Oh man - I couldn't have made it this far without the support and community of Stroller Strides! I have really needed the ability to see and talk to other moms every day. Even if I don't make it every day - just having the ability to go somewhere to talk to other people who understand what I am going through has been a tremendous gift and blessing!!! I would be crazy without this outlet!!!!
What is your favorite exercise? Running
What is your proudest moment? It might be when Penelope turns 1 but for now, I will say the moment I heard her cry in the delivery (operating) room.
What are three of your favorite things (besides your family!)? Coffee, chocolate, and wine. Ha!
Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us or makes you unique. My husband and I brew our own Kombucha. You may have seen it sold in grocery stores or places like Whole Foods. It's a probiotic drink and you have to basically ferment sweet tea to make it.
If we asked your spouse what they think your best qualities are, what would they say? Karl would probably say my discipline, focus, and productivity.
What advice would you give to moms looking to get back into shape? Just get out of the house and be around other people - do whatever you can but getting out of the house does a lot for you psychologically and that makes a huge difference!
